Almonds

Nutrition of Almonds

Consumers have new reasons to enjoy almonds as esearchers have recently announced that nuts not only taste good, but they're also good for you.

Almonds are one of the most nutritious of all nuts. As more and more consumers become dedicated to healthy life-styles, experts have found that adding natural foods, such as almonds, to your diet may be the prescription for physical wellness in the 21st century.

Cancer Prevention - Almonds are low in saturated fat and contain many other protective nutrients - calcium and magnesium - for strong bones, vitamin E and compounds called phytochemicals, which may help protect against cardiovascular disease and even cancer.

Phytochemical Powerhouse - Leading nutrition scientists presented their research findings in a symposium entitled "Nuts in a Healthful Diet", as a part of the 1998 Experimental Biology annual meeting. Dr. Gary Beecher, of the USDA-ARS, has analyzed the phytochemical content of almonds and states, "I have never seen this diversity of phytochemicals in a single food source."

Reduce Heart Attack Risk - A Loma Linda School of Public Health study showed those who consumed nuts five times a week had a 50% reduction in risk of heart attack.

Lower Cholesterol - In one clinical study, Dr. Gene Spiller, Director of the Health Research and Studies Center, Inc., showed that almonds added to the diet had a favorable effect on blood cholesterol levels and that none of the study groups experienced weight gain in the study.

Some nuts contain rhizveritrol, the anti-inflammatory agent found in red wines and thought to be responsible for the "French paradox". Many scientists have pointed to the French consumption of red wine as one factor in the lower rate of heart disease despite their diets rich in cream sauces and buttery pastries. The fat in nuts is unsaturated, or the "good" fat and there is no cholesterol in these fats.

If you think almonds are just for satisfying your mid-afternoon munchies, you're in for a surprise! These tasty tidbits pack a nutritional punch, combining tons of essential nutrients in one very delicious package.

One teeny ounce of almonds contains 12 percent of your daily allowance of protein. And absolutely no cholesterol, of course. You'll also get 35 percent of your daily allowance of vitamin E, that valuable antioxidant with so many cancer-fighting qualities. And most of the fat in almonds is monounsaturated, also known as the "good" fat.

This little nut is also loaded with minerals like magnesium, phosphorus and zinc, as well as lots of healthy fiber. And don't forget calcium and folic acid - they're in there too!

When you get right down to the details, it's no wonder so may people go nuts for almonds!

20-25 almonds (approximately one ounce) contain as much calcium as 1/4 cup of milk, a valuable tool in preventing osteoporosis.

Almonds are the best whole food source of vitamin E, in the form of alpha-tocopherol, which may help prevent cancer.

If you're pregnant, or thinking about it, almonds are a great source of the folic acid you need!

Almonds contain more magnesium than oatmeal or even spinach. Are you listening, Popeye?

Build strong bones and teeth with the phosphorus in almonds.

new "Move Over" Law

California's "Move Over, Slow Down" Law Takes Effect January 1, 2010.

Important Law to Share:

I wanted to let my Medlock Bridge neighbors know about the CA move over law.  My son got a ticket on Pleasant Hill coming back from Wal-Mart. A Duluth police car (turned out it was 2 police cars) was on the side of the road giving a ticket to someone else. My son slowed down to pass but did not move into the other lane. The second police car immediately pulled him over and gave him a ticket. My son and I had never heard of the law. It is a fairly
new law that states if any emergency vehicle is on the side of the road, if you are able, you are to move into the far lane.

The cost of the ticket was $754, with 3 points on your license and a mandatory court appearance.

Please let everyone you know that drives about this new law.

It is true (see details at the following web address). It states that except two states, all the other US states (even Canada ) enacted similar kind of law.

Global Village

If you could fit the entire population of the world into a village
consisting of 100 people, maintaining the proportions of all the
people living on Earth, that village would consist of
57 Asians
21 Europeans
14 Americans ( North, Central and South )
8 Africans.

There would be :
52 women and 48 men
30 Caucasians and 70 non-Caucasians
30 Christians and 70 non-Christians
89 heterosexuals and 11 homosexuals

6 people would possess 59% of the wealth and they
would all come from the USA
80 would live in poverty
70 would be illiterate
50 would suffer from hunger and malnutrition
1 would be dying
1 would be being born
1 would own a computer
1 ( yes, only one ) would have a university degree

If we looked at the world in this way,
the need for acceptance and understanding would be obvious.
But, consider again the following :

If you woke up this morning in good health,
you have more luck than one million people,
who won’t live through the week.

If you have never experienced the horror of war, the solitude
of prison, the pain of torture , were not close to death from
starvation, then you are better off than 500 million people.

If you can go to your place of worship without fear that
Someone will assault or kill you, then you are luckier than
3 billion (that’s right) people.
If you have a full fridge, clothes on your back,
a roof over your head and a place to sleep,
you are wealthier than 75% of the world’s population.

If you currently have money in the bank, in your wallet and a
few coins in your purse, you are one of 8 of the privileged few
amongst the 100 people in the world.

If your parents are still alive and still married, you’re a rare individual.
If someone sent you this message, you’re extremely lucky,
Because someone is thinking of you and
because you don’t comprise one of those 2 billion
people who can’t read.

AND SO?

Work like you don’t need the money.
Love like nobody has ever hurt you.
Dance like nobody is watching.
Sing like nobody is listening.
Live as if this was paradise on Earth.

Send this message to your friends.
Bypass those who are determined to see the worst
in the world no matter what.
If you don’t send it, nothing will happen.
If you do send it, someone might smile while they are
reading it, and that will be a positive.

  AND APART FROM THAT,
SIMPLY HAVE A NICE DAY.
